album of the week
Growing up in the East Bay Area was really special for two reasons.
1) Our sports teams were awesome.
2) Our hip hop was dope AF. From Vallejo, to San Francisco, to Oakland, we had some of the most incredible artists and rappers in the entire world!
Back at the end of my junior year in 1995, the Luniz dropped a single called “5 On It” that literally turned the bay upside down. I remember when it came out, it’s all we listened to! And then on the 4th of July (I think), they dropped their album, Operation Stackola, and it was the album of the summer.
Every car that drove by was slappin that shit. From 5 On It, to Playa Hata, to street tracks like Plead Guilty and Put the Lead On Ya. This was the sound of the bay in 95!
This Friday on the Hella Years Podcast we are going to revisit this bay area classic and talk about the impact the Luniz made in not just the bay area, but hip hop itself!
